The Ones in the Arena: Livepeer

Is it live, or is it Livepeer? The decentralized video streaming project enters the (code) arena with a $75K security audit contest. Artwork by Jaime Robles for Code4rena.

“[This audit contest] is an opportunity to get familiar with the Livepeer protocol and the future of video infrastructure, and work with a committed team on a credible project.” — Meredith Tretiak, Head of Marketing, Livepeer

There’s no shortage of ambition and visionary thinking in Web3, but even in a field where pioneering ideas are the norm, Livepeer’s decentralized video transcoding efforts possess an impressive boldness and momentum.

Founded in 2017, the project now has over 70,000 GPUs on its network and an ever-growing community that’s aligning the interests of video streamers, developers, tokenholders, and video miners.

As Livepeer gears up for its L2 migration, they’re undertaking a $75K Code4rena audit contest, so we invited Meredith Tretiak, Livepeer’s Head of Marketing, to talk us through the project and how they’re thinking about security— both for their own code, and for Web3 more broadly.

What are you building, and what sets it apart from similar offerings in the space?

Livepeer is building the world’s open video infrastructure. Livepeer is the leader in decentralized video transcoding.

What’s your vision for your project? What are you building towards in the longer view?

Livepeer reduces the cost to host livestreaming video by decentralizing video transcoding across a network of node operators. This provides greater access to video transcoding, and content recognition for developers.

“Participating in this audit is great for new and experienced auditors. It’s an opportunity to get familiar with the Livepeer protocol and the future of video infrastructure, and work with a committed team on a credible project.”

What’s the most innovative idea in your protocol?

Livepeer creates market efficiency by bringing together a network of decentralized node operators providing transcoding on par with centralized service providers.

It takes courage to undergo a public audit by a swarm of anonymous security researchers. It also says a lot about how much you prioritize security. What advice would you give to those on the fence?

Security is the utmost priority for Livepeer and the best way to accomplish security is to invite a community of experienced security researchers to evaluate the protocol.

We believe good contributions can come from anywhere. Participating in this audit is great for new and experienced auditors.

It’s an opportunity to get familiar with the Livepeer protocol and the future of video infrastructure, and work with a committed team on a credible project.

“I wish more Web3 projects would embrace those moving from web2.”

Security has become an increasingly vital topic in Web3. How do you think the ecosystem needs to evolve in order to rise to the challenge?

Growth of web3 depends on security and the long-term validation and resilience of each project. We are looking for new ecosystem participants in various capacities who believe in a decentralized future; security is an essential part of creating this future.

The ecosystem needs to evolve to provide more opportunities and embrace new contributors.

What gets you most excited about Web3?

True ownership.

Complete the following sentence: “I wish more Web3 projects would…”

I wish more Web3 projects would embrace those moving from web2.

What do you geek out about, beyond Web3?

Video infrastructure

Is there anything else you want to make sure we include?

Hope you join us!

LivePeer’s $75K security audit contest opens January 13, 2022, and runs for one week. Details at code4rena.com.

The Ones in the Arena spotlights emerging and established DeFi projects and their founders, with an eye to celebrating and learning from them. The series’ name is inspired in part by Teddy Roosevelt’s famous quote, which has a central place in Code4rena’s philosophy.
